What Is A Barrier Free Door Operator?
A barrier free door operator is a type of
electric door opener that automatically opens and closes a door. In this article we explain what a barrier free door operator is.
ADA Requirements 5Lbs Of Opening Force
Per ADA, or the Americans With Disabilities Act, the requirements state the opening force for an interior door should not exceed 5lbs. The opening force for outside doors or fire doors are not listed, however industry standards and most building codes state it as no more than 8.5lbs of opening force. On many door applications when the opening force is actually measured, the door exceeds the requirements. Factors like
weatherstripping, bent doors or frames, worn out
hinges, etc contribute to adding additional opening force needed to get the door open. This is where a barrier free door operator can help. With an automatic door opener, the door essentially requires no force to open because it is completely automated, allowing the door to meet the ADA requirements.
Barrier Free Door Operator Components
A standard barrier free door operator consists of the barrier free
automatic door opener which mounts to the top of the door frame. An outswing arm or inswing arm mounts to the door and connects to the door operator. An
outside activation switch is mounted on the exterior side of the door, while an inside activation switch is mounted to the interior side of the door.
