What Is An Automatic Door Operator?
An
automatic door operator is an electro-mechanical door control device. Automatic door operators are larger than traditional hydraulic door closers and can only mount top jamb (on top of the door frame). In this article we explain what an automatic door operator is!
Automatic Door Operator Vs Door Closer - How It Works
Most people are familiar with a
traditional door closer that mounts to the top of the door and allows the door to gently close. When a pedestrian pulls the door open he or she is actually compressing a spring in a traditional door closer, then when they pass through the door, the spring decompresses and the door closes. An automatic door operator does essentially the same thing. A dc motor inside of the door operator electrically opens the door while winding an internal clock spring. Once the door is fully opened, after a programmable time delay, the door automatically closes using the force of the wound clock spring.
Automatic Door Operator Components
An automatic door opener consists of a dc motor, a gearbox, a controller, and an arm. Automatic door operators vary in motor size and gearbox design. Often lower grade automatic door openers feature a two gear worm gearbox, while a commercial industrial gearbox will feature multiple gears allowing it to absorb force and abuse better.
Automatic Door Operator Activation Devices
Most automatic door operators use
stainless steel push to open plate switches. These durable, and commercial grade activation devices are easy to spot near the automatic door operator and last for years. More recently
touchless wave to open motion activation switches are used in healthcare facilities and commercial restrooms.
Automatic Door Operator Sensors
Automatic door safety sensors can be integrated on automatic door operators and is recommended to ensure optimum safety.
